In 2025, Point Loma High School defeated West Hills to win the CIF San Diego Section Division 2 championship, the first softball title in program history. Days later, the Pointers added a SoCal Regional title.

This spring, Point Loma advanced to the Open Division championship game, losing to perennial power Mater Dei Catholic.

Bill Hunyady, the head coach and architect of the Point Loma program, will not be back to pursue another title.

Hunyady, 62, was fired last month.

Hunyady said he was told by an assistant principal that four incidents led to his firing.

Three of them were related to parental behavior, and the fourth had to do with players practicing on the Pointers’ home field without permission.

Point Loma plays its home games at nearby Correia Middle School. Days after the season was over, Hunyady said he was told that some Point Loma players and friends were practicing on the Correia field.

Hunyady said he was asked by the vice principal to return his keys to the field. After he did, Hunyady was fired.

“I was shocked,” Hunyady said. “I couldn’t believe we were having this discussion. I thought at a minimum we would have a discussion where she asked about our process. When the season starts, do you meet with parents and talk about rules? Do they understand what’s acceptable behavior? We do.”

Added Hunyady: “I’ve been here nine years. For eight years, there’s been no problems. Let’s team together on how we can deal with some of these struggles.”

Point Loma administration would not comment on Hunyady’s firing.

James Canning, San Diego Unified School District’s executive director of strategic communications and information, called it  “a confidential personnel matter, which means we will not comment on the specifics of Mr. Hunyady’s employment.”

“What I can share is (that) individuals who hold the walk-on coach position, which is what Mr. Hunyady held, have no expectation of continuing employment,” Canning added, “meaning they are not guaranteed employment each year.”

Hunyady does not work on campus; he owns a construction company.

Hunyady coached the Pointers for eight seasons and part of a ninth, going 112-101-1. The Pointers went a combined 52-16-1 the past two years. In 2025, he was named the CIF San Diego Section Coach of the Year.

Hunyady and his staff had deep ties to the school. Of the nine coaches involved with the freshman, JV and varsity programs, seven — including Hunyady — were Point Loma graduates.

One Point Loma parent was stunned by his firing.

“It was shocking,” said Amy Mazara, whose daughter, junior Ella Poulin, is a two-time All-CIF player. “They’ve been there for nine years. My biggest thing is they’re alumni; they’re proud to be a part of it. They put their hearts and souls into it. From that perspective, it was surprising.”

Said Hunyady: “We went from a team that won seven games in a season to a team that won a championship and competed at the highest level. We created an energy and a vibe to where the stands were full with not only parents but community members that had no kids on the team.

“I had the greatest coaches you could have and created some magical memories for our athletes. It’s sad to see it’s over, but it’s wonderful to have happened. It’s a highlight in my life. Thank you, Point Loma.”

The vacant Point Loma coaching position figures to draw a strong list of candidates. In sophomore Remington Spangler and Poulin, the Pointers return two 2026 first-team All-CIF pitchers, both of whom are also excellent hitters.

Also back are senior Sienna Balistreri, a 2026 second-team All-CIF outfielder, and senior Leyton MacPherson, a 2025 second-team All-CIF infielder.
