MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — A $72 million beach renourishment project is complete in Myrtle Beach.
The work was designed to restore the shoreline and protect the coast from storm damage. Crews built a wider, higher beach and dune system to help absorb waves and better protect oceanfront homes, businesses and roads from flooding.
The project finished in North Myrtle Beach in January before proceeding to Myrtle Beach and finishing in July. It then moved to the final stages in Surfside Beach and Garden City, finishing this month.
Beach visitor Albert Nastasi said he saw the project progress from an area with pipes, digging and less beach space to the completed renourishment.
“It’s beautiful today, I’m looking at it, so I’m guessing they got it done,” Nastasi said. “This is the best I’ve seen the beach look in a long time and I am happy to be here.”
