Women’s Empowerment in Sacramento provides homeless women with resources, training, and support to overcome challenges and achieve stability

SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
Women’s Empowerment in Sacramento is helping homeless women rebuild their lives by providing essential tools like clothing, computers, and home-cooked meals, along with training and resources to support their journey.
“Our mission is to educate and empower women who are experiencing homelessness,” said Lisa Culp, founder and executive director of Women’s Empowerment.
The organization offers classes in job seeking, resume building, and more.
“Employment readiness skills and paid training opportunities and a housing navigator that works with them to get housing that they’re going to be able to afford,” Culp said.
For Patricia Wiggins, these resources were life-changing, helping her overcome homelessness and addiction.
“Resources I needed to end homelessness, to gain a job with the confidence of having an immaculate resume and cover letter,” Wiggins said.
Wiggins shared that she was homeless from 2013 to 2016. She has two children.
“I was just like lost,” she said.
She explained that the classes at Women’s Empowerment transformed her life, eventually leading her to secure a job as a hospice aide.
“All that inspiration had a huge impact on my life,” Wiggins said.
Now, Wiggins is giving back by volunteering to help others escape similar struggles.
“I’m giving back what was so freely given to me,” she said. “I walked through here barely with 30 days clean, and I’m standing here and within 30 days I’ll have 10 years clean. I never looked back,” Wiggins said.
The organization relies on volunteers to carry out its mission. Last year, more than 500 people contributed 7,000 hours of their time.
