Woman found burned and possibly dumped in Oakland may be victim of homicide

Authorities are investigating the apparent homicide of a woman whose charred remains were found beneath Interstate 580 in West Oakland last month.

The woman was discovered July 27 under the freeway near Hollis Street, a short distance from the Emeryville border, Oakland police said. Investigators believe she may have been burned at another location before her body was dumped at the site.

The discovery not far the MacArthur Maze was first reported by the San Jose Mercury News. 

Her cause of death has not been determined. Police said she may have been in her 20s and could be a woman reported missing about a week before the remains were found, according to the Mercury News.

Authorities are awaiting DNA and dental-records testing to confirm her identity. A California Highway Patrol officer discovered the body during a routine check several days after an encampment was cleared in the area, police said.

The CHP did not immediately return a request for comment.
