SAN FRANCISCO — Matt Wilkinson’s MLB debut was shorter than most Giants fans hoped, but it helped set the course for a solid win in Cleveland. 

The Giants never really tried anything interesting with their pitching over the first four months, even as they struggled with both their rotation and bullpen. They took a new approach Wednesday, and it certainly paid off in a 1-0 win over the Guardians.

Wilkinson was an opener in his debut and handed the baton off to Adrian Houser, who took the shutout into the eighth. When he walked the leadoff batter, closer Dylan Smith entered and struck out three straight. Smith gave up a one-out single in the ninth, but he had a good fastball and stuck with it to get the final two outs. The last one came with some extra juice.

Patrick Bailey had a flair for the dramatic in San Francisco even when he was struggling, and he was sent up to pinch-hit with two outs in the ninth. He watched a 95-mph fastball down the middle to end the game.

All Aboard

Wilkinson reached the big leagues at 23, and just over three years after Cleveland took him in the 10th round of the MB draft. He dominated Double-A before the Guardians sent him to San Francisco for Bailey and then made 14 starts at Giants affiliates before his debut. The first inning at the big league level was an impressive one.

Wilkinson retired the side in order as his parents watched nervously, showing good command of his repertoire, especially a fastball that he needs to spot given the lack of velocity. He threw 18 four-seamers in his debut, averaging 90.1 mph and topping out at 91.

The Guardians put seven balls in play against Wilkinson and only one was hit harder than 90 mph. He got three popups and generally did a good job of moving the ball around and staying off the barrel. 

The Giants used Wilkinson as an opener in his debut, and while the hope is that he can help their 2027 rotation, you can see how there might be a high floor here as a reliever if that’s what he ends up doing. He chewed up lefties in the minors and looked awfully comfortable against a lefty-heavy top of the Guardians’ lineup. 

Intriguing … 

Houser replaced Wilkinson in the third and came out firing. He sat 97-98 mph for a frame and threw his four hardest pitches of the season, perhaps trying to prove that this rotation spot should be his. 

Houser ended up scattering three hits over five shutout innings. Over his last six appearances, he has allowed just two earned runs in 25 innings.

It has been a disappointing season overall for Houser, and he has made no secret of the fact that he wants to be a normal starter again despite his early season struggles. The Giants probably need to figure out his role one way or another over the next five weeks. Houser has at times recently looked like someone who could be part of the rotation next year, but when his velocity ticks up, he also looks like someone who could possibly be pretty good in a late-game role if he just airs it out for an inning at a time. 

Right now, he’s just a bulk-innings guy, and that’s really not ideal usage for a guy owed $11 million next season. 

Willy’s Return

Adames was in the lineup for the first time since last Wednesday and had a solid day at the plate. He roped two balls into left and one to center for a three-hit night, just his sixth of the season.

Adames made a good defensive play in the first inning to help Wilkinson but booted a ball in the seventh, allowing the Guardians to have two runners on instead of being back in the dugout. Houser got out of that jam with a popup to the mound.

The Giants were stubborn about not putting Adames on the IL, and in the end he missed six days — two of them off days — with back discomfort. If he can have another good game on Thursday, it will perhaps have been worth it to go short for four games, even if it was an odd look.
