Coronado Unified School District is pleased to welcome Haylee Lavender as the new assistant principal at Coronado Middle School.
Lavender joins Coronado from Austin, Texas, where she most recently served as Senior Director of Schools. She earned both her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in Education from the University of Texas at Austin and brings 16 years of experience in public education.
Lavender began her career as an elementary classroom teacher, spending seven years in the classroom before serving as an instructional coach for two years. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she transitioned into school administration as an assistant principal. She later served as a principal for three years before moving into her district leadership role as Senior Director of Schools.
“I am really looking forward to working back at a school on a campus every day with students. I am excited to make this my new home,” Lavender shared.
Coming from a smaller school district, Lavender says she appreciates the close-knit, family-oriented atmosphere that drew her to Coronado.
“I think it is so important to have an engaged community like Coronado. I can’t wait to meet not just the students and staff, but also the parents and families,” she said.
Lavender has already been impressed by Coronado Middle School’s strong academic and extracurricular programming, pointing to student leadership opportunities through KCMS and ASB, as well as activities like school dances and clubs.
“When students have autonomy and can make choices that align with their interests, they are engaged and excited to be at school. I feel like CMS has that, with a community of teachers that prioritizes students and feels very connected. I can’t wait to be part of it. I’m excited to meet everyone!” she said.
Lavender will join an experienced administrative team at CMS and is looking forward to working alongside Principal Brooke Falar.
“I am very excited to partner with and learn from Brooke Falar. She is so relatable, with strong intuition and knowledge of the school and the district,” Lavender shared.
Outside of work, Lavender enjoys attending live music events and exploring her new home in San Diego with her Great Pyrenees, Scout.
“I came out to be with my boyfriend, and I brought my dog Scout with me. We love outdoor activities like hiking, exploring beaches, especially dog beaches, and just adventuring,” she said.
Lavender is also an avid Peloton rider and runner and is learning how to bodyboard.
“My entire family is in Texas, but they are very excited to come visit. My dad is already checking out the golf courses in San Diego!” she shared.
