Three people were killed in a fiery wrong-way crash on a Central California highway last weekend, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The three-vehicle collision happened at about 12:44 a.m. Sunday on southbound Highway 99, north of Seventh Standard Road, in the Bakersfield area. The CHP said one of the drivers was traveling north in the southbound lanes of the highway before the collision occurred.
A 2022 Honda Accord burst into flames as a result of the crash, the CHP said. A female driver and two passengers died at the scene.
The driver of a 2019 BMW 530i suffered major injuries and was taken to a local hospital, according to the CHP. The driver and a passenger in a 2022 Chevrolet Colorado suffered minor injuries.
The CHP did not immediately say which vehicle was being driven in the wrong direction. It also wasn’t known if alcohol and/or drugs played a role in the collision.
An investigation is underway.
