The Padres’ sale will bring a windfall to many with a stake in the franchise.
It will also be beneficial for those who work for the team.
Padres employees were notified via email on Thursday that they will receive bonuses early next week, when the transfer of ownership to the group led by José E. Feliciano and Kwanza Jones is completed.
The bonuses will be paid to full- and part-time employees.
Owners who are selling their shares and those who are rolling over all or part of their shares in the team are funding the bonuses. Every person with a stake in the team is contributing to the pool on a pro rata basis, with the size of their share determining the size of their contribution.
“The success of this franchise has always been about people, and so many dedicated individuals have contributed to the growth and accomplishments of the Padres throughout our family’s stewardship,” outgoing Padres chairman John Seidler said in a statement. “This bonus is a way for our ownership group to say thank you to the employees who helped make that success possible through their hard work, passion, and commitment to our organization and our community. We are deeply grateful for everything they have done and the role they have played in the Padres’ growth over the years.”
Seidler and other members of his family, as well as other current minority owners, will retain stakes in the Padres.
Feliciano, who will become the Padres’ new control person, and Jones will be introduced at a news conference Monday.
