Major construction projects are set for both sides of the Bay over the weekend; one will close all westbound lanes of the Carquinez Bridge and the other will limit lanes on one of the busiest stretches of Highway 101 in San Francisco.
Starting Friday at 11 p.m., Caltrans will close two lanes in each direction of the Highway 101 Bayshore Freeway (Hospital Curve) area and expects to keep them closed until Monday morning.
Caltrans is suggesting Interstate 280 or public transportation as an option as they shutter the lanes to work on the median near Hospital Curve.
It’s part of a longer-term project that started in 2025.
“So, what’s happening is on two of the fast lanes going northbound and two of the fast lanes going southbound between Cesar Chavez and 10th will be closed, but there will be two lanes that will remain open in both directions throughout the entire closure,” Lori Shepherd, with Caltrans said.
Across the Bay, all westbound lanes of the Carquinez Bridge are set to shut down Friday night as well.
“Westbound I-80 Carquinez Bridge, also known as the Alfred Zampa Memorial Bridge, we will be shutting down that span starting Friday night,” Sabrina Martinez with Caltrans Solano County said.
It’s all part of a pavement rehab project. The westbound closure starts at 10 p.m. Friday and is scheduled to reopen by Monday at 3 a.m.
Drivers are being pointed to I-680 as an alternate. Caltrans has been trying to get the word out.
“We are hoping we deter motorists from coming this way and minimizing as much traffic impact as possible, hopefully will more prefer to take out detours,” Martinez said.
The eastbound direction of the bridge will remain open. The San Francisco Bay Ferry said it would provide additional ferry trips Saturday and Sunday on the Vallejo route during the westbound closure.
