Well, that is not how you want to start a college soccer season.
GOOD NEWS: Marquette men’s soccer scored twice!
GREAT NEWS: Marquette scored in the second minute of the match to take a 1-0 lead off this play from Mateo Stoka:
BAD NEWS: Oakland men’s soccer scored twice against Marquette, both in response to each of Marquette’s two goals.
BAD NEWS: Marquette did not score a third time after the Golden Grizzlies pulled even in the 82nd minute.
REALLY BAD NEWS: Marquette managed just five shots in the entire 90 minutes.
GOOD NEWS: Marquette put two of those five shots into the net.
REALLY BAD NEWS: Marquette got outshot 9-2 in the second half.
REALLY BAD NEWS: Marquette’s final shot of the match was Tomiwa Adewumi’s first career goal… which came in the 72nd minute.
To review: Blew a 1-0 and a 2-1 lead. Got badly outshot 9-2 after halftime and 12-5 for the game. Had to settle for a draw with an Oakland team that went 3-9-6 last season and 0-5-3 in the Horizon League but were still somehow picked to finish fifth in the HL this season.
All of this after going 1-7-0 in Big East play last season and scoring just five goals in conference play…. even though they outshot opponents 14.8 to 9.6 in league action. That is… not how you want to go about things in your first match of the very next season.
Up Next: Marquette will try not to double down on this failure pile when they host Saint Mary’s on Sunday. First kick on August 23 at Valley Fields is scheduled for 1pm Central, and ESPN+ will have the broadcast. The Gaels also started their season on Thursday evening and they took a 5-0 loss to Wisconsin. The Golden Eagles face the Badgers in Madison on August 31st, so that’s a nice measuring stick for that match.
