Sacramento YMCA celebrates 160 years of service and plans new facility
SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
The Sacramento YMCA is celebrating 160 years of community service while preparing for its next chapter, which includes plans to build a new facility at its current site within the next five to seven years.
The YMCA has served the Sacramento region since 1866, expanding its programs over the years to include recreation, childcare, youth sports, aquatics, senior wellness, and financial assistance.
President and CEO Sharna Braucks highlighted the YMCA’s role in fostering community connections.
“Unfortunately, the electronic connections don’t keep us fulfilled,” Braucks said. “It’s places like the Y where you can come and hang out with your neighbor, bring your family, bring your friends.”
She also emphasized the organization’s ability to support local families and youth.
“I think the Y is perfectly positioned to be able to take its reputation, its history and its culture and be part of making sure that we are growing opportunities for young people and families,” former Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg said.
YMCA leaders expressed their hope to build a new Sacramento facility at the current site within the next five to seven years.
