Rafael Devers returns to Boston as the Red Sox host the San Francisco Giants on Friday.
The Boston Red Sox host the San Francisco Giants for their only series of the season, starting on Friday night. The Red Sox are still playing for better positioning in the AL Wild Card standings. Boston holds the second Wild Card spot, after looking like they’d miss October baseball for much of the first half of the season. But now the Red Sox are 68-59 overall and trying to get back to .500 at Fenway Park with a 31-32 home record. Boston has been struggling a bit lately, with a 4-6 record in its last 10, but they will have the remedy when they start Sonny Gray, who is having one of the best seasons of his first year in Boston. The veteran righty is 15-3 with a 2.65 ERA in 132.2 innings. The Red Sox are four games behind the New York Yankees for the top AL Wild Card slot. San Francisco is 52-75 with a 23-42 road record, and it is trying to avoid losing four of its last five games tonight. They will also be starting their best pitcher tonight, Logan Webb, who is 8-7 with a 3.50 ERA in 139 innings. The Red Sox are the big -181 favorites to win this opener on Friday night. This is the first time that Rafael Devers will return to Boston after being traded in 2025, not on the best of terms with the Red Sox.

The Red Sox are coming off a series win, dominating the first two games against the Arizona Diamondbacks. But Boston just missed out on a sweep, losing the finale on Wednesday, 7-6 in 10 innings. Nolan Arenado hit a tie-breaking RBI bloop single in the top of the 10th that broke his bat. The infield was drawn in to avoid the run, but it backfired, and then the Red Sox walked in what would ultimately be the seventh and winning run for the Diamondbacks. Wilson Contreras grounded out to third to drive in a run in the bottom of the 10th, but the Red Sox rally stopped there.
The Giants are coming off a series loss in their only matchup against the Cleveland Guardians, losing the rubber match on Thursday, 5-2. Gavin Williams was too much for the Giants lineup, striking out 11 over 5.2 innings. Willy Adames homered in the fourth inning to get back within one after Cleveland scored three in the first inning. But San Francisco was unable to score the rest of the way. Landen Roupp was tagged with the loss even though he settled down tremendously, not giving up another run through the sixth.
