BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A mother and her two daughters were killed early Sunday when a wrong-way driver triggered a fiery three-vehicle crash on a California highway, authorities said.
The California Highway Patrol said officers responded around 12:44 a.m. Aug. 16 to the crash on southbound Highway 99 in Bakersfield, north of 7th Standard Road.
CHP said the crash involved a 2022 Honda Accord driven by an unidentified female, a white 2019 BMW 530i driven by a 44-year-old man, and a white 2022 Chevrolet Colorado, driven by a 41-year-old woman.

CHP said investigators are currently looking into which vehicle was driving the wrong way.

As a result of the crash, the Honda immediately became engulfed in flames, and all three people inside died, according to CHP.

The Kern County Coroner’s Office has identified the three killed as 41-year-old Vanessa Sue Wetmore, 20-year-old Kylie Wetmore, and 16-year-old Kloie Wetmore, all of Bakersfield. The coroner’s reports said Kylie was the driver of the vehicle and Vanessa and Kloie were the passengers.
According to the GoFundMe, the mother and two daughters were heading home from Fresno after a concert.

The GoFundMe said, “What should have been a weekend filled with memories and a celebration of Kloie turning 17 has instead left a family trying to comprehend the loss of a mother and her two daughters all at once.”

The driver and solo occupant of the BMW sustained severe injuries, and the two people in the Chevrolet sustained minor injuries from the crash.
CHP said it is unknown if the use of alcohol and or drugs were a factor in this crash.
