A driver pulled a freeway U-turn and stopped at a gas station in a San Fernando Valley pursuit Friday that went on for more than an hour before ending in a head-on crash with a CHP patrol SUV on the 405 Freeway.
The Honda Accord driver, who is sought in connection with a burglary, maintained low speeds during much of the chase, but went through the parking lot of a 99 Cents Only Store and other businesses and briefly headed the wrong way on a 405 Freeway exit ramp. The driver made a quick U-turn on the freeway and joined northbound traffic in Mission Hills.
Moments later, the driver pulled into a fuel station and appeared to stop for gas.
Near Balboa Boulevard and Devonshire Street, the chase took another unusual turn when someone on a motorbike pulled alongside and in front of the car and motioned to the driver. It was not immediately clear whether the driver was known to the person on the motorbike.
The rider got off the bike and appeared to approach the passenger-side door at an intersection before the car took off again with patrol SUVs in pursuit. The motorcyclist continued to followed the car.
The chase appeared to enter a parking structure on or near the Cal State Northridge campus before exiting back onto streets.
The Honda, which appeared to have a damaged rear tire and a detached rear bumper, then collided with a SUV at a nearby intersection.
The chase came to an end after the driver pulled another U-turn on the 405 Freeway and went the wrong way before colliding with a CHP SUV. The man ran from the car, but was taken into custody by several officers after running down an embankment.
