BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — The California Highway Patrol had identified the vehicle that went the wrong way on Highway 99 as a BMW and the driver as 44-year-old Jamie Rodriguez of Tulare.
The California Highway Patrol said on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at around 12:44 a.m., officers responded to a three-vehicle wrong-way crash on southbound Highway 99, north of 7th Standard Road.
CHP said the crash involved a 2022 Honda Accord, a 2019 BMW 530i, and a 2022 Chevrolet Colorado.
CHP said on Friday, August 21, that the vehicle traveling in the wrong direction was the BMW.

As a result of the crash, the Honda immediately became engulfed in flames, and all three people inside died, according to CHP.
The Kern County Coroner’s Office has identified the three killed as 41-year-old Vanessa Sue Wetmore, 20-year-old Kylie Wetmore, and 16-year-old Kloie Wetmore, all of Bakersfield. The coroner’s reports said Kylie was the driver of the vehicle and Vanessa and Kloie were the passengers.

According to the GoFundMe, the mother and two daughters were heading home from Fresno after a concert.

CHP said the driver of BMW was identified as 44-year-old Jamie Rodriguez of Tulare.
CHP said all other aspects of the crash are still under investigation, including charges.
