OAKLAND, Calif. – A juvenile was stabbed Thursday during a fight at Castlemont High School in Oakland, authorities said.

Fight on campus

What we know:

Oakland police said officers and medics were dispatched to the school around 10:23 a.m. after a report of an assault. Authorities later confirmed the incident was a stabbing.

A preliminary investigation found that the juvenile was involved in a fight with other minors on campus after a disagreement in a back parking lot of the campus. During the fight, someone produced a bladed object and wounded the juvenile, police said.

Several people involved in the altercation were detained.

Juvenile hospitalized

Local perspective:

The wounded juvenile was taken to a local hospital. Authorities said the injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Officials have not released additional details about what led to the fight or said whether the juveniles involved were students at Castlemont High School.

Aftermath

Aerial footage showed a line of police vehicles outside the school as officers investigated.

Some parents in the area said they were not immediately notified about the incident. They said they noticed police activity at the campus and went to the school to find out what was happening.

The Oakland Unified School District later said students were kept inside classrooms until police gave the all-clear around 11:30 a.m. The school then returned to normal operations. 

” Officers are talking with the person or people they believe were responsible,” the school district said. “Police tell us the victim is in stable condition. We are working closely with their family to ensure they have what they need. Everyone who was impacted by this incident is being supported by school and district staff.”
