BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Bakersfield Christian High School football team and Faith Lutheran High School joined together to pray during halftime amid the shooting investigation at Independence High School Friday night.
On August 21, 2026, the Bakersfield Police Department confirmed they were investigating a shooting at Independence High School.

The shooting happened as dozens of high schools had their first football game.

According to an Eyewitness News crew at the football game, an Independence staff member told him that a fight broke out, and one person was shot in the chest.
Another Eyewitness News crew was at Bakersfield Christian High School. A prayer was held at the midfield during halftime.
