Santa Monica police fatally shot a person who allegedly charged at officers with a knife at Palisades Park on Saturday while they were investigating an unrelated domestic violence incident, authorities said.
Santa Monica Police Department said officers responded to Palisades Park near the 1400 block of Ocean Avenue around 12:49 p.m. following a report of domestic violence, according to the department.
While officers were interviewing witnesses, an individual who was not connected to the domestic violence investigation approached the officers armed with a knife and charged at them, police said. An officer opened fire, striking the individual.
The person shot was transported to the hospital, where he died.
The officer involved in the shooting was not injured, police said.
Authorities did not immediately release the identity of the person who was killed or provide additional details about what led up to the confrontation.
Investigators remain on scene to gather more information on the incident.
Police asked the public to avoid the area.
