EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — A 17-year-old died Friday night in Bakersfield following a shooting at a high school football game at Independence High School.
The Bakersfield Police Department confirmed in a statement that a 15-year-old male suspect was arrested on charges of murder and participation in a criminal street gang in connection with the shooting.
Police responded to reports of shots fired at the game just after 8 p.m. Friday. Officers found the 17-year-old victim, who was transported to Kern Medical, where he was later pronounced dead.
Investigators said that the suspect and victim knew each other and that they believe it was an isolated incident.
Police said there was no ongoing threat to the community.
“Our deepest sympathies remain with the family and loved ones of the 17-year-old who tragically lost his life. We also recognize the impact this incident will have on the family of the 15-year-old who was arrested. Two young lives and two families have been forever changed by an act of violence, and we extend our compassion to everyone affected by this tragedy,” Bakersfield police said in a statement.
