Four cooling centers will be available in Glendale Saturday as the city braces for high temperatures expected to continue through next Saturday.

The cooling centers are available to anyone seeking relief from the heat during the hottest parts of the day, according to the city.

The Adult Recreation Center, 201 E. Colorado St., will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Its weekday hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Pacific Park and Community Center, 501 S. Pacific Ave., will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Maple Park Community Center, 820 E. Maple St., will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays.

Sparr Heights Community Center, 1613 Glencoe Way, will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

City officials also urged residents and businesses to conserve electricity, particularly during periods of peak demand, as prolonged heat increases use of air conditioning and places additional demand on Glendale Water & Power’s electrical system.

Residents were encouraged to delay use of major appliances and electric-vehicle charging until early morning or after 9 p.m., adjust thermostats and turn off unnecessary lights and electronics.

Glendale Water & Power crews will monitor the electrical system and take steps aimed at maintaining reliable service during the heat, according to the city.

Residents looking for other ways to cool off can use Pacific Community Pool for recreational swimming, while splash pads at Pacific Park and Cerritos Park are available daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

City officials advised people to avoid outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, generally from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., drink plenty of water, wear lightweight clothing and seek an air-conditioned location if necessary.

Residents were also advised to make sure pets have access to fresh water and shade.

Symptoms of dehydration and heat cramps can include dizziness, fatigue, fainting, headaches, rapid heartbeat, muscle cramps and increased thirst, according to the city. Anyone experiencing serious heat-related symptoms was advised to seek medical attention or call 911.
