One person was killed and two more hospitalized after a home exploded on the 6000 block of Ocotillo Avenue in the city of Twentynine Palms on Aug. 21.

Three adults and a dog were inside the home when it exploded at around 8:27 p.m., according to the San Bernardino County Fire Protection District. Video captured by a neighborhood security camera shows a deafening explosion that sent a tower of flames into the air and rained hot embers onto nearby homes.

Marines from the nearby U.S. Marine Corps base were the first rescuers to respond to the disaster. The Marines pulled the victims from the wreckage shortly before firefighters arrived.

“One occupant was burned and transported by helicopter to the closest burn center, one sustained moderate injuries and was transported by ground to a local hospital, and the other one perished in the home,” the San Bernardino County Fire Protection District said. “The dog was rescued as well.”

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and the California Highway Patrol also responded to the disaster.
