The Port of Long Beach will hold a virtual meeting to update the public on the progress of the Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility next week.
The meeting, which is scheduled for 10 a.m. Sept. 2, will provide information about the project and solicit feedback from the public. To register, go to this link.
The facility is the centerpiece of the port’s rail capital improvement program, designed to shift more cargo to “on-dock rail,” which transports containers to and from marine terminals by train.
Moving cargo by on-dock rail is cleaner and more efficient, port officials have said — and it reduces truck traffic. No cargo trucks would visit the facility.
The Pier B terminal is being built in phases, coming online as sections are finished. Construction began in 2024 and is anticipated to be finished in 2032.

The project, according to its webpage, will “reconfigure, expand and enhance the existing Pier B rail yard, and directly connect to on-dock rail facilities and the Alameda Corridor railway.” The project has been estimated to cost $1.8 billion.
The project will also:
Double the size of the existing Pier B rail yard from 82 acres to 171 acres.
More than triple the volume of on-dock rail cargo the port can handle annually, from 1.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units to 4.7 million TEUs.
Feature a depot for fueling and servicing up to 30 locomotives at the same time, and a full-service staging area to assemble and break down trains up to 10,000 feet long.
