Good day everyone, I just thought I should come chime in and dump heaps of national politics junk on you. Perhaps you would like to hear my thoughts on Joe Biden. Or maybe I can interest you in why I think that you should feel the exact same way as me. I’m sure you care so deeply about what I have to say about Donald Trump. Ehhhh… maybe I can interest you in some more slop about politics that has absolutely nothing to do with Coronado?
I’m sure when you pick up the local paper you want to hear what some crazy living on the same rock as you has to say about things going on in D.C.! Right? We all can’t get enough of reading the same junk in every single news outlet we read. We have to make sure EVERYONE, yes EVERYONE, knows how we feel about things that have nothing to do with town. Exhilarating, isn’t it?
What’s the purpose? Why have we made so much of the Op-Eds about political jargon with minimal or, more often, no connection to Coronado? I don’t care how you feel about Donald Trump. I don’t care how you feel about Kamala Harris. No one does. We knew you were crazy. Well, actually, we didn’t before… but now that you’ve shared, we do! Look, if your thoughts happen to relate to issues in town, that’s when we need to hear about it. I’m all ears. If it relates to issues in Iran… maybe Eagle & Journal, the Coronado Newspaper, isn’t the best fit for your rambles.
To be frank, just about anything beats reading about national and worldwide politics in a local newspaper. Some write in suggestions for community resources; it’s productive. Some decide to write in comedy pieces; they’re hilarious. Some write in thank-you letters; they’re thoughtful. Some people tell me what they think about federal tax rates… pointless. Wrong place, wrong time. Would you ever give half a damn what Robert down the street has to think about third presidential terms or what he thinks about closure of the Strait of Hormuz?
Additionally, is the local paper really the hill you want to stand on to announce your political views? Maybe a politically oriented paper would change my mind. But I never read a piece from some yahoo and think, “Damn, that’s a good point. I guess I’ve changed my mind on the president.” For that matter, I doubt that’s happened for anyone. Ever.
I don’t know how long things have been this way, but they need to change. I’m well aware that I write some silly and at times downright ridiculous things into this paper. Even being the outrageous presence that I am within the bounds of these pages, I refrain from offering any political opinions because why would anyone give a crap? I’m proud to say that I keep things both straight to the point and On Topic (Coronado) when I submit opinions here.
So why keep doing this? I urge my fellow writers to consider the use of the Coronado Eagle and Journal. Before writing your next piece, ask yourself, “What’s the purpose?” Really sit down and think about the motives of the publication before submitting something that just does not fit. Square peg, square hole. Not square peg, circle hole.
