Oakland County Restaurant Quest: Saab Sis Thai in Royal Oak

Royal Oak, MI – The quest to try every restaurant in Oakland County led a friend and I to Saab Sis Thai in Downtown Royal Oak for a delicious lunch in a cozy, unique space.

Located in a lower level space, the windows at sidewalk levels meant being tucked away in a warm atmosphere while being able to watch the bustle outside.

My friend and I started out with an appetizer of Fried Tofu, served with sweet and sour sauce topped with ground peanut. The triangle shaped pieces were golden on the outside, beautifully presented, and perfect for sharing.

My friend ordered the lunch portion of Green Curry, which is made with bamboo shoots, eggplant, red pepper, green pepper, and fresh basil leaves, served with rice. My friend is a regular at Saab Sis who loves all the food they’ve had, including this.

I ordered the Coconut Noodle, which is a brilliant dish of stir-fried thin rice noodles, eggs, bean sprouts, white onions, green onions, and a sweet special sauce. I had it with chicken added for a boost of protein, which was cooked to a delicate softness and easily absorbed the sweet and flavorful sauce. A sprinkling of orange shaved carrots and purple red cabbage topped the dish, adding layers of color to the vibrant red of the noodles.

For dessert we shared an order of Mango Sticky Rice. The combination of adorably-colored bits of sticky rice with the tropical flavor of fresh mango, topped with the creamy sweetness of coconut cream was an absolute delight.

Saab Sis Thai has a menu full of quality Thai selections.

The Pad Kaprao, for example, is made with garlic sauce, red and green peppers, onion, green beans, and fresh basil. The Pad Woon Sen has stir-fried bean thread noodle with dark soy sauce, eggs, cabbage, carrots, green onions, onion, tomato, baby corn, and mushrooms. There’s even Pineapple Fried Rice that has both chicken and shrimp.

Other choices include Tom Yum Soup, Papaya Salad, Massaman Curry, Spicy Eggplant, Coconut Pudding and more.
