A 17-year-old was shot and killed Friday night during a football game at Independence High in Bakersfield.
Police said shots were fired after 8 p.m. between a group of individuals. Officers arrived and found the victim with a gunshot wound outside the stadium.
The teen was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police said the shooting was an isolated incident that began as an altercation.
The Kern County coroner’s office identified the victim as Levi Jermaine Carter Brown.
Police said there is no known relationship between Brown and the suspect.
The suspected shooter, a 15-year-old, fled the scene but was later arrested, police said.
“Our hearts are with the family of the 17-year-old boy who lost his life, and all those impacted by this tragedy,” police wrote in a statement.
