Port of Oakland’s laden cargo holds firm through July

The Port of Oakland held loaded cargo volumes largely stable through July, down just 1.5 per cent compared with the same period in 2025.

Full exports rose 0.4 per cent, while full imports fell 3.1 per cent. The port handled 179,999 TEUs in July, broadly unchanged from June. Full imports rose 1.7 per cent month-on-month, while full exports dropped 7.9 per cent.

Against July 2025, total volume was down 11.4 per cent. Full imports totalled 79,426 TEUs, a 14.0 per cent year-on-year decline, while full exports reached 60,005 TEUs, down 8.5 per cent. Combined laden cargo stood at 139,431 TEUs, down 11.7 per cent.

Through July, the port has handled 1.29 million TEUs in total, down 3.8 per cent on the same period last year.

The overall decline has been driven largely by fewer empty container movements, with empty volume down 11.4 per cent year to date against a 1.5 per cent dip in laden volume.

Empty container volume totalled 40,568 TEUs in July, down 10.2 per cent from July 2025. The port recorded 81 vessel calls during the month, compared with 95 a year earlier.

Jason Garben, Acting Maritime Director at the Port of Oakland, said: “July was a challenging month compared to last year, but our laden volumes remain essentially flat year to date and exports are slightly ahead of 2025. Despite uncertainty in the market, we are hearing a positive outlook from our ocean carrier partners for the remainder of the year.”
