Oakland stabbing spree kills 1, wounds 4 in 30 minutes; suspect arrested
One person was killed and four others wounded in a series of Oakland stabbing attacks within a 30-minute span on Monday evening, police said.
The suspected attacker was taken into custody and a weapon recovered at the scene after community members helped to pinpoint the suspect.
The first stabbing, which was initially believed to be a shooting, happened at 7:30 p.m. inside Cesar Chavez Park, located in the 1800 block of 38th Avenue. Despite officers’ lifesaving attempts, the victim died at the scene.
The second victim was located near 38th Avenue and San Leandro Street.
While at the scene, BART police said a third stabbing victim was found near the Fruitvale BART station.
The fourth and fifth stabbing victims were then located near 39th Avenue and International Boulevard.
Community members then told officers just before 8 p.m. to head to the 1500 block of 39th Avenue, where officers took the suspect into custody.
Details about the victims and the suspect’s possible motive were not released.
