New food, merch, toys, shows and décor are transforming Disneyland and Disney California Adventure into mildly haunted versions of themselves

Jack Skellington has returned to the Haunted Mansion, Mickey and Minnie are wearing harlequin-inspired orange-and-black costumes, and that famous three-story Jack-O-Lantern has landed on Main Street, U.S.A. As of this week, Halloween Time has officially launched at Disneyland.

A slew of new food, merch, toys, shows and décor are transforming Disneyland and Disney California Adventure into mildly haunted versions of themselves through the end of next month.

As a new Coco attraction, inspired by Pixar’s 2017 hit about a boy entering the land of the dead, rises in the distant corners of California Adventure, the area has received a makeover inspired by the film. Countless marigolds decorate Plaza de la Familia, which is filled with calecas, cartonería and papel picado conjuring the spirit of Día de los Muertos. Live music and entertainment pavilions have arrived for the holiday.

There are new food items in the area, including a Nuez gelatina cake, but we were particularly taken with the revolving sipper cup that featured characters from the living world and beyond from the movie dancing inside a lighted lantern. Some of the park’s other Halloween Time food items caught our eye, including the BBQ pork muenster grilled cheese, an oversized offering with olive eyes that look back at you, turning the concoction into a muenster monster.

There is a new daytime mini parade, Mickey’s Trick and Treat, at Disney California Adventure and a nighttime show called Halloween Screams built around evening fireworks at Disneyland. Modern classics like Mater’s Graveyard JamBOOree and the makeover of Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! into Guardians of the Galaxy – Monsters After Dark are both back at DCA. The resort’s big after-hours party, Oogie Boogie Bash, also returns this year with only limited Tuesday and Thursday tickets available at press time.
