The Sacramento Police Department will hold a DUI checkpoint Friday night to identify drivers suspected of being impaired by alcohol or drugs.
The checkpoint will run from 8 p.m. Friday to 1 a.m. Saturday at an undisclosed location in Sacramento’s city limits.
Police said the checkpoint location was selected based on data identifying areas where impaired-driving crashes occurred. The operation was intended to remove suspected impaired drivers from the road and improve traffic safety.
Sgt. Anna Mahoney said impaired drivers put others on the road at risk.
“Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety,” she said.
The department reminded drivers that alcohol was not the only substance that could cause impairment. Certain prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs and marijuana could interfere with a person’s ability to drive safely.
According to the Sacramento Police Department, a first-time DUI could result in an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended driver’s license.
The DUI checkpoint was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
