A woman died Wednesday morning after the Tesla she was driving crashed into a farm tractor hauling grapes near Elk Grove, California, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 5:38 a.m., according to FOX40 News, which first reported the incident. The California Highway Patrol responded to reports of the collision and determined that the Tesla had been traveling behind a farm tractor.

The tractor was hauling grapes when the Tesla crashed into it. Following the collision, the Tesla caught fire, FOX40 News reported.

The woman driving the Tesla died as a result of the crash. The driver of the farm tractor was not injured, according to the CHP.

The crash occurred in an agricultural area near Elk Grove, where farm equipment and other large agricultural vehicles can be part of the traffic mix, particularly during periods of active farming and harvest activity.

The circumstances leading up to the collision remain under investigation. CHP said it is not known whether the Tesla was operating in an autonomous mode or using a driver-assist system at the time of the crash. That detail could be relevant to the ongoing investigation, but authorities have not indicated that the vehicle’s operating mode was a factor in the collision.

ABC10 also reported on the fatal collision, describing it as a fiery crash involving a Tesla and a farm tractor on Kammerer Road near Highway 99.

Agricultural equipment can move considerably more slowly than passenger vehicles and may be transporting crops or other materials during harvest and other busy periods. For farmers and motorists alike, maintaining awareness around agricultural vehicles is especially important.

Drivers approaching tractors should allow additional following distance and exercise caution when passing, while farm equipment operators must contend with traffic moving at substantially different speeds.

Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has additional information to contact CHP at 916-897-5600.
