A big rig overturned on southbound Interstate 5 in Yolo County near Woodland early Thursday morning, killing the driver, officials said.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident took place on the freeway south of County Road 95, shortly after 6:05 a.m. The collision blocked both southbound lanes of I-5 through the area.
Photojournalist Dave Grashoff reported that the driver of the big rig was extricated and a helicopter was called to the scene. The California Highway Patrol later confirmed that the driver had died.

Authorities said the driver drifted onto the right shoulder and attempted to return to the road. This is when the driver lost control and the big rig overturned.
“It’s unknown at this time, may have been a distraction or fell asleep. Unfortunately, the solo occupant did not survive the crash,” said Sgt. David Barker of the California Highway Patrol.
The driver’s identity has not been released.
A representative of rapper J. Cole said the driver had been hauling equipment for his upcoming concert at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento on Thursday night. The big rig had traveled from Seattle, where the rapper held a concert on Tuesday.
Thursday night’s concert is expected to go on as scheduled, the representative said.
The crash impacted drivers during their morning commute.
