Martin Hoffman brings his 3 year old to Learning Jungle Daycare located in the Rancho San Diego shopping center at the corner of Avocado Boulevard and State Route 94.

He reached out to NBC 7 San Diego with concerns surrounding the safety around the area because he said in the last few months, he said he’s noticed a growing number of transients in the area and with it, more trash.

On Thursday morning, he and his son had an experience that he said was the tipping point of his frustration.

“We were cruising on our bikes to drop my son off here and there was you know, a homeless guy, I assumed he was homeless, in the sidewalk and I just said, hey coming through and he just turned around and just started screaming, cursing, making threats,” Martin Hoffman said.

Hoffman said one time a sleeping bag was found in the playround area of the daycare.

He said he and his wife worry for the health and safety of their son and the other kids.

“I don’t feel safe leaving my kid here anymore,” Hoffman said.

NBC 7 reached out to the regional director of the daycare to ask about the situation and is still awaiting a response as of publication of this story.

Hoffman said he reached out to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and fire department only to be told that their hands are tied because the trash and encampments are on private property.

NBC 7 also talked with the leasing agent for the property and asked to speak with the owner, but we did not hear back in time for publication.

“We want to be compassionate to the homeless that are around here, but I feel as a parent and father of three, I really shouldn’t have to choose between my kids’ safety and health and being compassionate for the homelessness around here,” Martin Hoffman said.

Hoffman hopes bringing light to the situation will lead to a resolution.

“I’d like to see some accountability. Someone give me an answer that can say hey, we see what’s happening and we’re going to do something about it,” he said.

NBC 7 San Diego reached out to the sheriff’s department. They said they are working on the request and will have an update Friday.
