A San Diego police lieutenant has been placed on administrative duties following his arrest on suspicion of domestic battery, authorities said.
Ruben Gutierrez, 47, was arrested after Chula Vista police responded to a report of domestic violence at a home on Corte Maduro shortly before 4:15 p.m. Sunday, police said.
After an initial investigation, Gutierrez was arrested and later booked into county jail, a Chula Vista police spokesperson said. He was not in custody Thursday, according to a sheriff’s online jail log.
He has an arraignment scheduled for Sept. 5, a District Attorney’s Office spokesperson said.
No other information about the incident was immediately available.
Gutierrez has been with the San Diego Police Department for 23 years. A San Diego police spokesperson said he had been placed on administrative assignment as a result of the arrest. The spokesperson was unable to say what the lieutenant’s last assignment had been.
Several years ago, Gutierrez founded a club to offer free boxing lessons for kids in Logan Heights at the Memorial Recreation Center.
In a 2020 story, he told the Union-Tribune that he started the Imperial Boxing Youth Athletics Club to try to get young people to learn not only about boxing but about responsibility, respect, accountability and hard work.
Gutierrez, who grew up in Barrio Logan, said he had used boxing as a teen to stay out of trouble. “They are not just leaving here knowing how to box,” Gutierrez said in the 2020 story. “They are leaving here with tools…tools to lead better lives.”
