A major-injury crash on a California interstate left a semi truck dangling over the side of a bridge Friday.

The single-vehicle crash happened at around 10:45 a.m. on Interstate 80 near Floriston in Nevada County, according to the California Highway Patrol. The driver was ejected in the crash and suffered major injuries, the CHP incident report states.

Photos of the scene show the truck’s cabin hanging over the bridge’s guardrail. The truck’s trailer overturned and completely blocked the eastbound lanes of the highway. Eastbound traffic was turned around at Hirschdale Road while crews worked to clear the crash.

Crews used a heavy-duty tow truck to remove the cabin from the bridge, video of the crash shows. The Caltrans QuickMap showed that eastbound I-80 traffic remained backed up in the area at 8:45 p.m.

“Expect significant delays,” CHP’s Truckee office said Friday evening. “There is a substantial traffic backup in the area, and emergency personnel and equipment remain on scene. Please slow down, use caution, and give crews plenty of room while traveling through the area.”

Images of the wreckage show that the truck’s cabin was severely damaged in the crash. The driver was flown to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nev. Their condition is not known at this time.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
