LONG BEACH — The Long Beach Poly football team dropped a nonleague game Friday night to Yorba Linda 30-13 in its final game at Veterans Stadium before it is torn down and rebuilt.

Poly quarterback Ace Fa’agata completed 6 of 23 passes for 101 yards and a touchdown. He threw one interception.

Jayden Coley caught three passes for 16 yards and a touchdown. Zion Anderson had a kickoff return for a touchdown.

Following the loss, Poly coach Travon Patterson was not in the mood to reminisce about his time at Veterans Stadium.

“It doesn’t feel good today,” Patterson said. “We went out and took an L to a really good Yorba Linda team, so it doesn’t feel good at all.”

Poly struggled with penalties compiling over 100 yards combined on offense and defense.

“You have to sharpen it up.” Patterson said. “We’ve got to on them to pay attention to detail, be disciplined and understand it isn’t about talent, it’s just about playing the game the right way. When you do that good things will happen to you.”

Yorba Linda opened the scoring on a workman-like drive on the game’s first possession.

The Mustangs marched 76 yards and held the ball for just over nine minutes before Isaiah Trujillo punched in a 2-yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead after an Andrew Churney extra point.

On the ensuing Poly possession Trujillo intercepted Fa’agata at the Poly 45 and ran, untouched, into the end zone for a pick-6.

Yorba Linda (2-0) led 14-0 to close the first quarter.

Yorba Linda quarterback Noah Trujillo completed 8 of 9 passes for 84 yards. Running back Isaiah Trujillo led Yorba Linda, rushing 15 times for 80 yards and two touchdowns.

He also scored on the interception return.

Trujillo relished the win to close Veterans Stadium.

“It’s an honor,” Trujillo said. “We played here before, and unfortunately last time we lost, but I’m happy to take the win this time.”

Poly (1-1) looked disjointed in the first half, with penalties undoing potential momentum-changing plays on defense, including a Poly interception at midfield negated by pass interference.

Trujillo made Poly pay again in the first half, capping off another long drive, this one 82 yards, with a 10-yard touchdown run.

Poly’s last gasp to stay in the game came with 2:54 left in the first half. Facing fourth-and-3 at Yorba Linda’s 46-yard line, Fa’agata found Coley for nine yards and a first down.

Later in the drive Fa’agata connected with Coley for a 3-yard touchdown pass. The extra point attempt missed, leaving Poly down 21-6 at the close of the first half.

Aiden Gutierrez scored for Yorba Linda in the fourth quarter when he ran in a 2-yard touchdown with 7:50 left for a 27-6 lead after a blocked extra point attempt.

Poly scored its final points on a Zion Anderson 85-yard kickoff return, cutting the Yorba Linda lead to 27-13 after the extra point.

Andrew Chruney made it a 30-13 Yorba Linda lead with a 30-yard field goal with under three minutes left in the game.
