Oakland police internal audit uncovers alleged $38K employee fraud

(KRON) — The Oakland Police Department said a routine internal audit uncovered alleged employee fraud totaling about $38,000.

Police said irregularities were found while reviewing employee time sheets, prompting investigations by the department’s Internal Affairs Bureau and Criminal Investigation Division.

According to police, investigators found evidence of alleged grand theft and public official fraud. The employee was placed on modified assignment during the investigation and is now on administrative leave.

OPD said the case has been turned over to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office for possible criminal charges.

The department said it is also working with the City of Oakland to improve time-tracking technology and reduce the risk of similar misconduct in the future.

Because the case involves an ongoing personnel matter, police said no additional details are being released at this time.
