His given name is Ezaya Tokio, but he introduces himself as EZ.Nothing Tokio does is EZ.The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Oceanside High School linebacker isn’t imposing, but his speed, quickness and anticipation make him an outstanding player.Friday, in a 35-14 Division 1 playoff win over Holtville, Tokio had 14 tackles, two tackles for losses and a pair of sacks, one of which he forced a fumble, recovered the ball and returned 74 yards. The Pirates, who are 7-4 and winners of five in a row, were facing Holtville’s Enrique Armas, the state’s leading rusher, who came into the game with 2,437 yards and 32 touchdowns.”He’s a fantastic player,” Tokio said of Armas. The Pirates, however, held Armas to 141 yards after a last-play run was properly recorded.Of his 26 carries, seven went for zero or minus yards while another 10 went for two or three yards. He did have runs of 38, 30 and 20 yards. He did not, however, reach the end zone.”He’s the leading rusher in the state, so we were keying on him,” said Tokio, who has committed to play at Washington, choosing the Huskies after visits to Colorado, Cal, UCLA and Arizona State. “We made a commitment to stop the run.”Once we got ahead and they had to start throwing we were able to pin our ears back and get after the quarterback.”Holtville quarterback Alonso Cuevas was 11 of 15, but for just 95 yards. He was flushed out of the pocket and forced to run seven times.”I’m really proud of the way we played and that we finished strong,” said Oceanside coach Fale Poumele. “Holtville (9-2) did a helluva job, and I tip my hat to them.”But we made some adjustments at the half and kept them out of the end zone the second half.”Levi Fesili had a big defensive night for Oceanside with 12 tackles. Kymani Nua had an interception. Lincoln Mageo, an offensive lineman, had just one tackle, but it was for a loss, stopping Armas for a two-yard loss on fourth-and-one at the Oceanside 3.Oceanside advances to play at No. 3-seeded Mount Miguel.
