EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — More than 40 schools in the San Diego Unified School District, along with dozens of other schools across the state, were included in the 2026 “America’s Healthiest Schools” list.

The list, presented by Alliance for a Healthier Generation and sponsored by Kaiser Permanente, honors schools across the country that are “leading the way in supporting the physical, mental and social-emotional well-being of students, staff and families,” according to a statement from the school district.

Five schools in the San Diego district, Birdrock Elementary, Edison Elementary, Horton Elementary, Normal Heights Elementary, and Rowan Elementary—earned the top All-Star distinction, awarded to schools that excel in all nine topic areas measured by the program, the district said.

“Student wellness is the foundation for everything we want our students to achieve,” Dr. Fabi Bagula, superintendent of San Diego Unified School District, said in a statement. “When students feel physically and emotionally well, when they know they belong and have caring adults supporting them, they are better prepared to learn and reach their full potential. Having 42 schools recognized nationally as America’s Healthiest Schools is a testament to the educators, staff, students, families, and community partners who make wellness part of how we support children every day.”

Schools on the list are evaluated in nine categories that include nutrition, physical activity, staff well-being, social-emotional climate, family engagement and food access.

Alliance for a Healthier Generation’s list included dozens of schools across SoCal and the rest of the state, including in LA, Riverside and Orange counties.

Schools in Los Angeles included: Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School, New Heights Charter School, Sunrise Elementary School and 93rd Street Elementary School.
