There is a reason a century-old theatre makes such a good setting for a horror movie. The Balboa has the creaking, shadow-heavy atmosphere the genre was built on, and this fall it is putting that to work three separate times.
Two of those nights belong to silent film with a live organ score. The third belongs to fishnets, a shadow cast, and the original Magenta herself.
Season Three Opens With Ichabod and a Live Organ
Silent Movie Mondays returns for its third season with The Headless Horseman (1922), starring Will Rogers as Ichabod Crane. Theatre organist Ken Double performs the score live while the film runs.
A silent Sleepy Hollow is a strange and wonderful thing to sit through. The live accompaniment does most of the atmospheric work, and it does it well.
John Barrymore Turns Into Mr. Hyde on October
The second Silent Movie Monday brings Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920), with John Barrymore playing both halves of the role. David Marsh takes over on organ for the night.
Both screenings run on the Wonder Morton organ, which is a different animal from a recorded score. You feel the low notes in the seat.
Patricia Quinn Brings Magenta Back to the Balboa
The Rocky Horror Picture Show screens in a new 4K restoration, and Patricia Quinn, the original Magenta, will be there in person.
Expect a live shadow cast, full audience participation, and a costume contest. Dress accordingly.
