PICO RIVERA, Calif. — Around 3,000 people remain missing, and more than 670 people are dead following the catastrophic flooding along the Nepal-China border. Southern California also faces the risk of dangerous flooding, right in our backyard.
That’s why there’s the Whittier Narrows Dam. But years ago, it was determined to be at high risk of failure during extreme flooding. Construction on safety improvements is now expected to begin this fall.
