A 37-year-old man from Oxnard survived a car crash after careening down a 75-foot cliffside along the Pacific Coast Highway in Ventura County Sunday morning.
The man was driving a gray 2006 Honda Accord on the southbound side of the Pacific Coast Highway near Mugu Rock at about at 5:04 a.m. when the car veered off the roadway and tumbled to the rocky cliffside below, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The man was still in the driver’s seat when emergency crews arrived. An emergency helicopter scanned the ocean for other possible victims. However, officials don’t suspect that any passengers were inside the car at the time of the crash.
“Upon contact, the driver was alert, conscious, and communicating with emergency personnel,” CHP said.

The driver was approaching Mugu Rock at a high rate of speed moments before the crash, witnesses told CHP.
“For reasons that remain under investigation, the driver turned his vehicle to the right, traveled off the roadway, struck a rock before plummeting 75 feet off a cliff and onto the rocky shoreline,” CHP said.
Firefighters extricated the man from the car and checked him for injuries. Despite the potentially disastrous crash, the man suffered minor injuries, according to CHP. He was taken to a local hospital by ambulance for treatment.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Authorities are unsure if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash, at this time. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact CHP’s Ventura office.
