At the beginning of his century a match up between the Yankees and Angels was as big as it got in Major League Baseball. The Angels had to go through the Bronx Bombers to win their first and only World Series title in 2002. Seven years later the Yankees paid them back in the ALCS on their way to a crown.
Always played in front of a packed house at the Big A, the series has produced a ton of memorable moments for both franchises. And for years Mike Scioscia’s Angels more than held their own against their New York counterparts.
Those days are gone but the energy and packed house that accompanies a Yankees series remain. Here are the top storylines to watch as the Angels host the Yankees today through Wednesday.
Can the Angels Youth Movement Play Spoiler Against New York?
Most of the Angels players watched Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge when they were in Little League. While neither Yankees slugger will play in this series, that shows just how young much of the Angels team is. Zach Neto is fresh off an AL Player of the Week Award and is somewhat of an elder statesman on the Angels at only 26 years old. Youngsters like Denzer Guzman and Ben Joyce will get their first experience against New York this week.
The young arms of the Angels have come alive lately, staging a historic turnaround in August following the firing of pitching coach Mike Maddux. Now they face the tall task of keeping the team with the second most home runs and fifth best on base percentage in the AL off the board.
For Angels fans, seeing how the young players perform in a charged atmosphere against a powerful lineup should be fascinating. For the Yankees, breakout star Ben Rice is the top youngster to watch. But the real challenge lies in how Angels hurlers can get Rice, Cody Bellinger, and Paul Goldschmidt out.

Unfortunately, George Klassen will miss his scheduled start tonight. After breaking through in a major way lately it would have been nice to see him take his electric stuff on the mound against the Yankee sluggers. With none of the three Angels starters announced as of Sunday afternoon, just how manager Kurt Suzuki handles this mine field will be interesting.
The Yankees are set with Eduardo Rodriguez, Gerrit Cole, and Cam Schlitter. That is a formidable trio that will ensure they are favored in each match up.
Reid Detmers pitched on Friday so he could be on tap for Wednesday’s finale. Grayson Rodriguez last pitched on Wednesday so he will take the middle game. Walbert Urena, a big part of the rebuild, will be on the hill tonight.
Anaheim did bring back lefties Mitch Farris and Blake Weiman to help counter the Yankees powerful lefty bats.

As of now the Yankees are comfortably in the postseason as a wild card. However, the Rays are within reach and the Yankees organization does not play for wild card berth. The fans and execs in New York would love to see their team gain ground with a sweep of the lowly Angels. v
The Yankees and Rays play a four game series in three weeks and the Yankees (and networks) would love to have a division title on the line. Along with a division title would likely be the top overall seed in the AL and home field advantage at least through the ALCS.
But first the Angels get a chance to knock a dent in those plans. Whether the Yankees leave Orange County 1.5 or 7.5 games out of first place hinges on this series.
