The Press-Telegram’s high school football rankings on Monday, Aug. 31, to begin Week 2 of the season.
FOOTBALL TOP 10
1. St. John Bosco (1-1)
St. John Bosco raced out to a 38-7 lead at halftime before securing a 45-25 victory against Roman Catholic of Pennsylvania in last week’s home opener. Senior running back Maliq Allen scored four total touchdowns (three rushing, one receiving) and gained 161 total yards to lead the Braves offense. Bosco gained 228 rushing yards on 39 carries, which has also been a recipe for success for Coach Jason Negro’s teams. Senior defensive back Dorian Franklin, who is committed to Harvard, had a 41-yard interception return. USC linebacker commit Josiah Poyer finished with seven tackles and 1.5 sacks. Bosco should look to run the ball against Pittsburg High this week, one of Northern California’s premier programs.

2. Long Beach Poly (1-1)
Senior receiver Jadyen Coley caught a touchdown pass in the second quarter, and junior receiver Zion Anderson returned a fourth-quarter kickoff for a touchdown, but Long Beach Poly suffered a 30-13 loss to Yorba Linda at Veterans Stadium on Friday. The Jackrabbits will need to limit turnovers and penalties against a quality Tustin team, led by four-star receiver Hayden Koo, who may line up at quarterback again this week. The Tillers also feature a 6-2, 320-pound fullback named Jeremiah Williams, who is committed to BYU.

3. Los Alamitos (0-2)
Los Alamitos trailed 31-7 at halftime in an eventual 31-15 loss to Huntington Beach on Thursday. Senior running back Kamden Tillis, who is committed to San Diego State, ran for 73 yards on 12 carries. The Griffins have split time at quarterback between Elijah McDaniel, Luke Osborn and Zachariah Correa this season. Up next is a tough matchup against Gardena Serra.

4. Downey (0-2)
Downey sophomore quarterback Chase Watkins completed 8 of 12 passes for 264 yards and two touchdowns in a 33-23 loss to Capistrano Valley. The Vikings found some success on the ground. They ran for 127 yards on 25 carries, led by junior running back Max Acosta’s 113 yards and one touchdown. Downey showed better offensive rhythm, in particular with a 75-yard strike between Watkins and senior receiver Damani Porras (New Mexico commit), which bodes well going into this week’s local showdown against Millikan.

5. Warren (2-0)
Warren rises to No. 5 after a thrilling 26-25 road victory against Scripps Ranch on Friday. Senior quarterback Jordan Malikin had four total touchdowns (three passing, one rushing). He completed 22 of 28 attempts for 290 yards and three touchdowns. Receivers Dallas Watson, Julian Padin and Dylan Thompson all had receiving touchdowns.

6. Mayfair (1-0)
Mayfair drops to No. 6 after a 42-0 loss at Bullard of Fresno Friday. They trailed 20-0 at halftime. The Monsoons will have a short week to get ready for Thursday’s nonleague game at Marquez in Huntington Park.

7. St. Pius X-St. Matthias (0-1)
The Warriors are coming off a hard-fought 34-21 loss against St. Bonaventure in the team’s home opener Friday. St. Pius struggled to stop the Seraphs’ running game, which ran for 165 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries. They will look to pick up their first victory of the season against Muir this week.

8. Millikan (0-2)
The Rams are coming off a 28-7 road loss against Loyola on Friday. Junior running back Ryan Carter scored the team’s lone touchdown in the first quarter. Millikan will be seeking redemption this week for last year’s 55-7 loss against Downey.

9. Compton (2-0)
The Tarbabes rise to No. 9 after senior running back/receiver/cornerback Edward Rivera scored all four touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving, one punt return) in Compton’s 28-21 road victory over Orange Vista on Thursday. The Sacramento State commit finished with 268 all-purpose yards (151 rushing, 53 receiving and 64 punt return). Compton will be tested by Bishop Alemany this week.

10. Wilson (0-2)
Wilson drops to No. 10 after a 63-0 loss at JSerra Friday. The Bruins only gained 107 yards of total offense against the Lions. They will host Huntington Beach, which is led by Ohio State quarterback commit Brady Edmunds, in the team’s home opener on Sept. 4, which will celebrate 100 years of Wilson football.
