Lionel Richie has been hospitalized after a concert in St. Louis, less than a month before his rescheduled performance with Earth, Wind & Fire at San Francisco’s Chase Center.
The 77-year-old singer checked himself into a hospital after his Saturday, Aug. 29, performance at The Muny in Forest Park, Mo., “out of an abundance of caution,” a source close to Richie’s touring staff told ABC News.
TMZ, which first reported the hospitalization Monday, Aug. 31, said Richie was in an intensive care unit undergoing tests. Sources with direct knowledge told the outlet that doctors were investigating possible dehydration and that Richie hoped to be released Tuesday, Sept. 1.
The singer’s next scheduled performance remains the Sept. 26 Chase Center concert with Earth, Wind & Fire, according to both the arena and Richie’s official website. Neither had announced a change to the show as of Monday.
Richie’s latest hospitalization follows another health scare onstage in June.
During the June 24 opening night of the Sing a Song All Night Long Tour in St. Paul, Minn., Richie told the audience he was feeling dizzy and “strange” and performed “Dancing on the Ceiling” while seated.
He left the stage after about 55 minutes and did not return. His next two concerts, in Chicago and Columbus, Ohio, were postponed under doctors’ advice that he rest and return to full health.
At Saturday’s St. Louis concert, witnesses told TMZ that Richie appeared to struggle near the end of the show and asked his crew for a chair while performing the finale, “All Night Long.”
The Muny had billed the one-night concert as the finale of its summer season.
The San Francisco concert has already been postponed once because of a separate medical emergency.
Earth, Wind & Fire drummer John Paris was hospitalized shortly before the group’s scheduled Aug. 6 performance at Chase Center, forcing the show to be called off minutes before its 7:30 p.m. start.
The concert was later rescheduled for Sept. 26. Chase Center says tickets for the original date will be honored.
Paris subsequently regained consciousness after being placed under sedation but remained in intensive care and faced two major surgeries, according to the latest family update made public Aug. 20. His diagnosis has not been disclosed.
