OAKLAND, Tenn. – The Mayor of Oakland, Tennessee’s son and several of his friends have been arrested after damaging the mayor’s opponent’s political signs, and the mayor has been implicated in the plot, court documents show.
FOX13 obtained an Oakland Police Incident Report which shows that police pulled over three of the suspects on August 5, the day before Election Day.
Police said one of them confessed to officers that Mayor Adrian Wiggins paid her to vandalize Chelsea Kivelle’s campaign signs.
Wiggins and Kivelle were running against each other for the District 9 Commission seat in Fayette County, which Kivelle won.
The suspect also told police that Wiggins told her to lie and deny everything about the incident if they got caught.
Police said three signs were destroyed and 25 to 30 others were stolen.
The suspects have been charged with misdemeanor theft and vandalism.
Mayor Wiggins has not been charged.
