A new ordinance proposed in San Francisco would increase protections for renters facing eviction over unpaid rent.
The proposal, introduced by Supervisor Jackie Fielder and co-sponsored by five other supervisors, is also backed by Mayor Daniel Lurie.
Under the city’s existing rent ordinance, tenants can face eviction for any nonpayment of rent. The proposed ordinance would increase that threshold to at least one month of unpaid rent.
Lurie said the proposal would provide much-needed stability as San Francisco continues to see increases in rents and the number of evictions.
Oakland and Berkeley have implemented similar laws setting the threshold for eviction at one month of unpaid rent.
