An accident that involved a cherry-picker falling off a flatbed truck Tuesday morning led to access being blocked to Yerba Buena Island from both the eastbound and westbound Bay Bridge.
The incident happened around 8:45 am Tuesday, as ABC 7 reports, with a cherry-picker — a motorized crane mechanism with a basket used for raising construction or utility workers up to reach the top of utility poles, and such — having fallen onto the roadway on Yerba Buena Island’s Macalla Road.
The crane apparently fell off of a flatbed truck, and it was lying on its side, blocking much of the road.

Per ABC 7, the situation led to police closing the off-ramps from the Bay Bridge in both directions onto Yerba Buena Island — though it seems access to Treasure Island was still available via separate ramps, despite reports to the contrary.
Traffic subsequently backed up into the city, and in the westbound lanes as well, due to lane closures around the off-ramps.
As KRON4 reports, all lanes reopened as of 2:15 pm Tuesday.
There’s been no explanation for how the accident occurred.
For a long time mostly uninhabited, Yerba Buena Island is now home to over 120 housing units, with over 100 more planned or under construction. Around 8,000 more units are planned or completed on next-door Treasure Island.
