The fall semester introduced a new Associated Student Government (ASG) President, Singh Bains, formerly the Inter Council Chair (ICC). Bains wants student voices to be heard, connecting students with Fresno City College and campus.
He was born in a small town in India where he spent his early years before moving to Modesto with his family. After graduating from Central Catholic High School in 2024, Bains enrolled into FCC as a business major. Now in his fifth semester, Bains has watched himself grow and get out of his comfort zone as he has aimed to serve this community.
“I wasn’t a very outgoing person before, but now I like to talk to people. I try to help [students] the most I can,” Bains said. “I try to listen to their concerns and try to see what we can do better for them.”
Senior program specialist Janice Wong works in the Student Activities office, where last year Bains worked as ICC. Wong cites this job as an influential moment in Bain’s tenure with ASG, believing it set him up to be ASG president.
“I think [being ICC] gave him an excellent opportunity to really learn how to run a meeting. To make sure all the processes and procedures are taken care of,” Wong said.
Bains said he wants to make sure students feel connected to the campus.
“Most students I see or know, they come for their classes but leave afterwards. They don’t really stay on campus to connect or make friends,” Bains said.
To bridge that gap, ASG plans to host “tablings” every week to talk to students and give them an opportunity to talk to ASG. Bains and vice president Jasleen Ganger also expressed plans to potentially host an event with counselors to sit outside with ASG and meet students face to face.
Ganger is brand new to ASG and has been grateful for Bains’ experience helping her get settled into her role.
“The first meeting was so awkward. I was kind of lost about where to sit, what to say,” Ganger said. “But [Bains] has a good flow with how all the meetings go, you’re able to say ‘okay next section’, because [Bains] already knows what to do.”
This is Bains’ fourth semester as part of ASG, and as president he has to ensure his whole team is supported so everyone can fully achieve their role in ASG.
“[Bains] has really stepped up to his role because most of us haven’t really experienced what ASG is, but I am grateful about Singh knowing a lot of people on campus, especially faculty,” Ganger said. “It makes it easier for us to talk to them and each other while we are getting to know each other.”
When Bains was ICC, Wong described him as a good listener, respectful and organized. All characteristics she believes will make him a great leader as ASG president.
“He works well with everyone. There’s never been a time where I’ve seen him have a difficult time working with someone,” Wong said. “Whether it’s with administrators, faculty, classified and students, he’s somebody that can bring people together.”
Through the semester, Bains’ goals are to bring students, faculty, administration and classified staff even closer together. ASG has public meetings in the senate chambers located in student activities every Tuesday at 3 p.m. where any student can join to hear how Bains and ASG are working to improve FCC.
