Tuesday, Supervisor Jackie Fielder introduced a new proposal offering more protections for renters in San Francisco.
Currently the city’s rent ordinance allows evictions for any amount of unpaid rent. However, Fielder’s ordinance would only allow an eviction if a tenant owes more than a month’s rent.
That amount would be defined using the federal government’s “fair market rent.”
So, how much is rent nowadays?
$2,400 for a studio.
$2,900 for a one-bedroom.
$3,600 for a two-bedroom.
The ordinance is being co-sponsored by five other supervisors and is backed by the mayor, who says the city continues to see increases in rent and the number of evictions.
“We’re seeing rental evictions being up close to 10% over the past year, and I am really encouraged and very supportive of … the legislation being proposed today by Supervisor Fielder and her five co-sponsors,” San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie said.
Oakland and Berkeley have also implemented similar laws setting the threshold for eviction at one month of unpaid rent.
