Selland Arena received a major upgrade Tuesday with the unveiling of a new video scoreboard ahead of the Fresno Falcons’ season opener in October.

The city of Fresno unveiled the new scoreboard inside the arena in front of invited Falcons fans and community members.

Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer called the installation an important moment for the arena, acknowledging that upgrades were needed while expressing hope that Selland Arena can attract more events to downtown.

“It’s been important,” Dyer said. “We knew for many years that we needed to replace that scoreboard. We worked with VenuWorks and the county to make sure we had the funding and the partnership in place.”

Dyer said the new jumbotron cost $625,000. It replaces the arena’s previous scoreboard, which had been installed around the 1980s and repaired several times over the years.

Fresno Falcons President Jimmy Fries called the unveiling a historic day for the organization.

During the ceremony, the new scoreboard displayed memorable moments from the Falcons’ history.

The new scoreboard is expected to be a prominent feature when the Falcons open their season at Selland Arena on Oct. 9 against Oceanside.
